This excel spreadsheet program is used to calculate an estimate of the cost to produce a cwt of milk from your schedule F information. You input information like gross milk income, total pounds of milk for the year and average number of cows and acreage in the shaded cells. Other entries include your totals for the schedule F expense categories, non-milk income categories, crop income and inventory changes.
The out put section reports your cost of production per hundredweight and per cow. You can adjust this by your depreciation, family living and principal payments. Comparisons of your cost of production are made to average Michigan cost of production from 1995-2004, which can then be printed. A blank form is on a second sheet. This Cost of Production worksheet exercise can be an important part of any business plan or milk marketing strategy.
